Round 6 Standard RCQ Recap

Murders at Karlov Manor Standard RCQ Recap

The first major Standard event of the season has come! 19 players arrived to battle it out for 4 invites to the upcoming Regional Championship in Montreal. With a swath of playable archetypes and a new set to add to the format, it looks like the aggro and midrange decks of the format are on top! But even in these two broad categories we see many different decks, and within those decks different card choices between players! Let’s take a look at the cream of the crop of the new and improved Standard format with our top 8 deck lists:

Douglas Maguire (1st) – RW Convoke

Adam Joyce (2nd) – BG Midrange

Matthew MacMullin (3rd-4th) – RW Convoke

Luke Nicholson (3rd-4th) – Esper Midrange

Christopher Brackley (5th-8th) – RB Midrange

Mark MacGregor (5th-8th) – Mono Red Aggro

Phil Samms (5th-8th) – RB Aggro

Adrian Quiring (5th-8th) – RB Midrange

In a hostile top 8 full of removal spells, Doug Maguire’s RW Convoke deck reigned supreme. I got the chance to ask Doug what made him choose the Convoke deck for this event, and if he had any favourite cards that were absolute All-Stars for him over the course of the tournament. Here’s what he had to say:

I just felt like attacking. I’ve been playing a lot of combo decks recently and just wanted to end games quickly. Warden was fantastic, if it’s not killed early it just becomes a Serra Angel. Warleader’s Call out of the sideboard helped with grindy matches where your creatures allow you to win the game through board stalls.”

Congratulations to all of our top 8 and to Doug, Adam, Matthew, and Luke on securing their invites! Good luck in Montreal!
